   Samuel anoints Saul

As we have seen in this week's readings, Saul and David both had their flaws.  However, David tended to please God while Saul displeased Him.  What differences between these two men led to God's preference for David over Saul? Were they actions, attitudes, or both?

  3. How about this for a comparison between Saul and David?

Saul was man's kind of king (1 Samuel 10:23-24 - well to do, tall in stature, and imposing). David was God's kind of king (2 Samuel 7:8-16 - the Lord personally guided David and understood his true heart).

Saul was a man after people's praise (1 Samuel 18:6-8 - Saul got angry when the Israelites had higher praise for David than Saul). David was a man after God's own heart (Acts 13:22 - God testified to Samuel that he knew David loved Him).

Saul's kingship was rejected (1 Samuel 15:23 - Saul rejected the word of the Lord and was then rejected by Him). David's kingship was eternal through Christ (2 Samuel 7:29 - blessed David and his house forever).

Saul was cruel (1 Samuel 20:30-32; 22:11-29 - Saul cursed his own son! And he later killed all the priests who sided with David!). David was kind and benevolent (2 Samuel 9; 1 Chronicles 19:2 - David was still kind to Saul's family and household; David remembered kindness shown to him and returned it).

Saul was unforgiving (1 Samuel 14:44; 18:9 - Saul never forgave Jonathan for befriending David; Saul watched David like a hawk). David was forgiving (1 Samuel 26 - David could have killed Saul but had a forgiving heart and did not).

Saul lied when confronted (1 Samuel 15:10-31 - he blamed his men for not killing ALL the Amalekites). David repented when confronted (2 Samuel 12:13; 24:10 - Admitted his sin to Nathan and to God; David sinned by taking a census of the people and repented again).

Saul was fearful (1Samuel 17:11; 18:12 - Saul was afraid of the Philistines instead of looking to God; Saul was afraid of David because God was with him and not Saul). David was courageous (1 Samuel 17; 1 Chronicles 18 - David had no problem facing Goliath with God at his side; David did not care who he had to face, what nation, what king - he battled them all bravely with the Lord's help. That's still courage - one wink of doubt and could have gone the other way!).

Saul was separated from God (1 Samuel 16:14 - the Spirit of the Lord left Saul, replacing a tormented soul). David was at peace with God (Psalms 4:8; 37:11 - he felt safe in the Lord; wanted to be meek for the Lord).
