  1. How do you feel about Israel's conquest of Canaan? Does the fact that women and children were slaughtered along with the men bother you? Give it some thought. We'll be discussing this topic tomorrow.

  2. Nope, doesn't bother me one bit. God had the Israelites destroy nations that were not walking or fellowshipping with Him. They were nearly as wicked as those living in Sodom and Gemorrah. My opinion is similar to those I saw in both Desert Storm campaigns and what the Vietnam vets were introduced to for the first time - no uniforms, use of children as booby-traps and shields, and women taking up arms with the same ferocity as the men, sometimes using their feminine wiles to draw men into ambushes.
If one just knew the rest of the world is not nearly as soft as the United States has become, those same people may want to bolster the mettle of this country. Tolerance breeds complacency, and complacency leads to surprise attacks. The world was a lot tougher in those days anyway. Remember the heathens of the Old Testament used torturous tools more brutal than any the Israelites used. As a matter of fact, the Israelites killed outright and did not make the enemy suffer.

    Your Answer: Jehovah is salvation

Jesus's Hebrew name would have been Joshua, which is also written as Yehoshua, Yeshua, and Hoshea.
53% of players have answered correctly.

    2. To what tribe did Joshua belong?

    Your Answer: Ephraim
Ephraim was one of the sons of Joseph, the son of Israel (Jacob). The priests came from the tribe of Levi, and the Messiah descended from the tribe of Judah.

    3. When is Joshua first mentioned in the Bible?

Your Answer: Just after the Exodus
He is first mentioned in Exodus 17:9, when Moses tells him to lead the forces against the Amalekites. This is just a matter of months after the Exodus, and prior to the conquest of Canaan.
60% of players have answered correctly.

    4. When Moses was on Mount Sinai for forty days and forty nights, listening to the word of God, Joshua accompanied him.

    Your Answer: True
We tend to think of Moses as being alone during this time, but Exodus 24:13 says that "Moses rose up, and his minister Joshua: and Moses went up into the mount of God." When the pair later returned to camp, Joshua mistook the sounds of the crowd worshipping the golden calf as the sounds of war (Exodus 32:17). Joshua also later accompanied Moses into the tabernacle (Exodus 33:11).
44% of players have answered correctly.

    5. When Eldad and Medad prophesied in the camp, Joshua told Moses to prohibit them from doing so. Did Moses take Joshua's advice?

    Your Answer: no
Moses said, instead, "would God that all the Lord's people were prophets, and that the Lord would put his spirit upon them!" (Numbers 11:29)
62% of players have answered correctly.

    6. When sent to spy out the promised land, Joshua was one of only two spies who gave a positive report. How many gave a negative report?

    Your Answer: Ten
There were twelve spies total, but only Caleb and Joshua said they thought the land could be taken.
75% of players have answered correctly.

  4. 7. Before which priest was Joshua set when he was ordained a leader of the people?

    Your Answer: Eleazar
In Numbers 27:17-23, Joshua was publicly ordained. Moses asked God to set a shepherd over the congregation, to lead them in his absence, and the Lord chose Joshua. Moses laid his hands upon Joshua "and set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation."
46% of players have answered correctly.

    8. In the first chapter of Joshua, God repeatedly tells Joshua to be what?

Your Answer: Strong and of good courage
God tells him this in Joshua 1:6, 1:7, and 1:9. Moses also tells him the same in Deuteronomy.
75% of players have answered correctly.

    9. Joshua sends two men to spy out Jericho. With whom do they lodge?

    Your Answer: A prostitute
They lodged in the house of Rahab the harlot, who hid them and lied to save them when the men of Jericho came looking for them. For this, she was rewarded with her life when the Israelites sieged the city.
88% of players have answered correctly.

    10. Which miracle occurs first in the book of Joshua?

Your Answer: The waters of the Jordan are parted
This first miracle occurs in Joshua 4. When the priest bearing the ark of the covenant set foot into the waters, the Jordan parted. When they came back onto dry land, the waters fell back into place, and flowed over the banks of the Jordan as before. To commemorate the event, Joshua had each of the twelve tribes lay out a stone as a memorial.
55% of players have answered correctly.

    11. What did Joshua do to the men shortly before they went to war with Jericho?

    Your Answer: Circumcised them
Apparently, those who were born in the wilderness had not undergone the covenant of circumcision. This occurs in Joshua 5, at the command of God.
58% of players have answered correctly.

    12. How many times, total, did the Israelites compass the city of Jericho before the walls fell?

    Your Answer: Thirteen
They went around it one time per day for 6 days, and then 7 times on the 7th day.
46% of players have answered correctly.

    13. After the conquest of Jericho, who took the "accursed thing," bringing God's wrath upon the Israelites?

    Your Answer: Achan
See Joshua Chapter 7. The Jews were not supposed to take of the spoils of war, but Achan did, and hid them in his tent. As a consequence, Achan and his children were stoned and burned along with the stolen possessions.
68% of players have answered correctly.

    14. According to the Book of Joshua, where else is the miracle of the sun and moon standing still recorded?

Your Answer: The Book of Jasher
This books has been lost to us today. Some scholars associate it with a book mentioned in Numbers and II Samuel, called "the book of the wars of the Lord."
34% of players have answered correctly.

    15. Joshua wrote the entire book of Joshua.

    Your Answer: False
Joshua could not have written the book in its entirety, because it speaks of the conquests of Hebron, Debir, and Leshem, events that occurred after Joshua's death. The book even speaks of Joshua's own death. Conservative scholars, however, do attribute the bulk of the work to Joshua. Some Jewish traditions maintain that while Joshua wrote most of the book, the post-Joshua material was added later by Eleazar and Phinehas. Liberal scholars, on the other hand, dispute Joshua's authorship altogether, and they posit several hypothetical sources for the book that span several centuries.
72% of players have answered correctly.
